25 Movies That Just Missed the Cut.

If you're a stone-cold movie lover, putting together a list of your 25 favorites is a painful task. There are just too many you love, warts and all; too many movies that refuse to be ignored.

I just finalized a list of my 25 favorites for the countdown we're starting this Wednesday (starting with Nos. 25 and 24, and adding two a day every Wednesday and Friday), and paring it down was really arduous. It hurt to leave out so many. So, in honor of those movies, here's my list of the 25 movies that just missed the cut (I could easily do a list of 50 or 100, but I don't want to bore you guys too much):

Citizen Kane (1941)
Barry Lyndon (1975)
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
Paths of Glory (1958)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
Zodiac (2007)
No Country for Old Men (2007)
Fargo (1996)
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Robocop (1987)
Superman (1978)
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)
Blue Velvet (1986)
All the President's Men (1976)
The Battle of Algiers (1966)
They Live (1988)
The Manchurian Candidate (1962)
Total Recall (1990)
Planet of the Apes (1968)
The Paper (1994)
Brazil (1986)
Unforgiven (1992)
Stroszek (1977)
Pinocchio (1940)
Boogie Nights (1997)

  1. Fine list. I've been wanting to see Zodiac.

Also...Pinocchio!? I'm a big fan of the story, not the biggest fan of this film. I'm just surprised that its on here.

Can't wait to see the top 25.

  2. Wow, my #6, #9, and #19 didn't make your cut. Five others on your list just missed my Top 25 too.

  3. Disney's Pinocchio was such a huge building block of my imagination. The Pleasure Island and whale sequences were the darkest things I had seen at that time in a movie (although, unwittingly, I would be exposed to The Exorcist not long after). It, along with the Wizard of Oz and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, which both just missed the "just-missed" list, were very, very important movies in the development of The Colonel you know today.

Goddamn this was a tough list to make.

  4. This is a good list! I'm curious to see the top 25.

  5. nice list, quite a few classics as expected that I still haven't seen. I'd have Forest Gump, T2, Tmnt in there :)

  6. Just wait until you see my Top 25, Neil! Just you wait!

Go ahead, say something.
